New Mpox Strain Emerges: A Global Health Crisis on the Horizon

A new, highly contagious strain of mpox is sweeping across continents, and while it hasn't reached the U.S. yet, the looming threat could have far-reaching consequences for global and American health.

What is Mpox?

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a virus similar to smallpox. It's called "mpox" to avoid any confusion or stigma associated with monkeys. The virus was first discovered in monkeys in 1958, but it can spread to humans, often through close contact with infected animals or people.

A Dangerous New Strain Spreads in Africa

Recently, a new and more dangerous strain of mpox, known as clade I variant Ib, has caused a significant outbreak in central Africa. This outbreak, which started in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has spread to 12 other African countries. So far, in 2024 alone, over 17,000 people have been infected, and more than 500 have died from the virus.

Because of how fast and deadly this strain is, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global health emergency. This is a serious alert that means countries around the world need to be on high alert to stop the virus from spreading.

How Mpox Spreads and What It Looks Like

Mpox can spread from animals to humans, but it also spreads easily from person to person, especially through physical contact. Symptoms of mpox include fever, headaches, body aches, and a rash that turns into painful blisters filled with pus. While most cases are mild and last two to four weeks, the disease can be deadly if not treated.

Is Mpox in the United States?

As of now, the new strain of mpox has not reached the United States. However, health officials in the U.S. are preparing for the possibility that it might arrive. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued warnings and is monitoring for any signs of the virus. They are especially concerned after a Swedish traveler was diagnosed with mpox after returning from Africa, marking the first case of this new strain outside of Africa.

Vaccines: Our Best Defense

Vaccines are available and are the best way to protect against mpox, according to healthcare professionals. The JYNNEOS vaccine, which requires two doses, is highly effective against both major types of the virus. However, in the U.S., many people at risk haven’t been fully vaccinated.

Why This Matters to Americans

The outbreak of this new mpox strain has big implications for the United States. Although the virus hasn’t arrived here yet, the U.S. might need to contribute more vaccines and medical help to stop it from spreading globally. This situation also highlights the importance of being prepared for health crises, both in terms of having enough vaccines and making sure people are aware of the risks.

If the virus does spread to the U.S., it could lead to new challenges for our healthcare system and spark discussions about how we handle pandemics and protect public health. The fight against mpox is a reminder that global health issues can have a direct impact on all of us, and staying informed and prepared is crucial.
